WHITE FRAGILITY
by Robin Diangelo
Why it's so hard for white people to talk about racism
On May 29, 2020, Bishop Lewis issued a call to action against systemic racism. It is my belief that our nation, our state, our town, and each individual has held within itself some form of racism; some larger than others. In response to this call to action, I will be offering at Bethany a book study reflecting on race. Jesus says that we must take the log out of our own eye, before we can take the speck out of others. And so, it is my hope that this book will lead us into conversations that allows us to reflect on how we, personally, have handled this sensitive topic of race and understand its complexities.
The book we will be reading and reflecting on is New York Times best seller: White Fragility written by Robin Diangelo. We will read two chapters a week, which will allow for us to finish this book together in 6 weeks. If you would like to participate in this conversation, which I hope MANY of you will, we will meet in person, though a virtual option via Zoom will also be offered.
The study will begin on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 PM . Please pick up your own copy (either a physical book, E-book, or even an audible book if you like) and begin reading today. So that I can best organize our time together, please let me know if you plan to participate in this conversation this fall.
